The Rainbow Ruse: Covering All Your Bases

A crafted statement that credits the client with both a specific personality trait and its exact opposite simultaneously.

The Deep Dive

The Rainbow Ruse is a more sophisticated cousin of the Barnum Effect. It is designed to ensure the psychic can never be wrong, regardless of the client's actual personality. A master cold reader will say something like, 'You are usually a very calm, level-headed person who thinks things through, but when you are pushed too far, you have a fiery temper that surprises people.' Because everyone has a breaking point, the client immediately agrees, remembering that one time they yelled in traffic. The psychic has successfully covered both ends of the 'rainbow' (calm and angry) in a single sentence, guaranteeing a hit.

How to Spot It

You can spot the Rainbow Ruse by listening for the conjunction 'but' or 'however' linking two opposing traits. 'You are very giving with your money, but you also know when to be financially conservative.' 'You love being around your friends, but you deeply cherish your alone time.' These statements are tautologies; they are true by definition because they encompass the entire spectrum of human behavior.

The Skeptic's Verdict

Rainbow Ruses are the ultimate safety net for a fraudulent advisor. When evaluating a platform like Kasamba or Keen, look for advisors who are willing to make definitive, one-sided statements that carry the risk of being wrong. An advisor who relies exclusively on Rainbow Ruses is providing psychological comfort, not psychic insight.
